Euros 2018 Nottingham = Day 1

lord-byron‘Adversity is the first path to truth… Out of chaos God made a world, and out of high passions comes a people.’ Lord Byron, writer, native of Nottingham.

Out of the chaos of the playing gear fiasco, the Ireland Touch teams all performed strongly today.

Out of the high passion of me going for a dawn walk having barely slept and thinking I could just get on a plane and go home and be done with this embarrassment of an Irish sports organisation, then tired and playing with a splitting headache all day… I had my most serene day in an Irish jersey ever.

And I did well. I scored 5 tries which is more than I scored in the last two championships combined.

We won our three matches.

vs Luxembourg. Won 8-2.

Vs Italy. Won 13-3.

Vs Portugal. We won 13-2.

Not the best teams in the competition but still very comprehensive performances. In last year’s tournament in Edinburgh, I only scored one try which the camera missed, so here’s a bit of video of a few tries I was involved in below in the Italian game.

Did the tiredness, the mental stress of yesterday and this morning have any effect on me? Well, when you sub off into a wrong sub box full of Italians, that’s probably a sign it had some effect. I got the right one eventually.

We did well today and grew as team. It was a long day. I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward as much to a cup of tea as much as I did this one.

Tomorrow, our big test is likely to be England in the second match. I’m looking forward to that challenge.

Our third game against Belgium at 18.10, you can watch live on the link below.
